Rita Blue is a major protagonist in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale, the television adaptation of the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood.
She is a Martha in Gilead, assigned to the Waterfords as their slave and personal maid. Despite seeming to have given up out of despair by the beginning of the series, after meeting June Osborne she begins fighting back against Gilead, eventually taking part in a massive smuggling operation known as Angel's Flight to get children out of Gilead and becoming a public speaker in Canada.
She is portrayed by Amanda Brugel.
What Makes Her Love Exalted?[]
- Despite her initial apathetic nature, she does begin to support June during her pregnancy and rebellion against the Waterfords.
- Even though Serena does not treat her well, Rita still is sympathetic to her when Fred cheats on her, having a drink with her to help her calm down.
- She finds and helps to publish the Rachel's package, a series of letters by women abused in Gilead that inform the rest of the world how dire the circumstances in the country have become.
- She helps June and the other Marthas with Angel's Flight, a smuggling operation that gets that Marthas and several children successfully out of Gilead and into Canada.
- She becomes a public speaker in Canada, going to a charity event organized by Luke to discuss her time in Gilead and participation in Angel's Flight.
- After settling down in Canada she begins searching for her sister and nephew, serving as there emergency contact in case they ever turn up.
- While visiting Serena in her prison cell she is informed of the latter's pregnancy, and despite everything Rita is happy for her and calls her unborn son a miracle.
- After it becomes clear that Serena wants Rita to testify on her behalf in court, Rita refuses and tells Fred that he is going to be a father despite Serena not wanting him to know, refusing to still be Serena's property now that she has escaped Gilead.
- During June's despair over being unable to save Hannah in season five, Rita tells her that while she has moved on with her life, her son is gone, and that if he was still alive she would do anything to save him, meaning June should never stop fighting either.
- Alongside Moira, she helps June and Luke flee Canada once it becomes clear that Gilead supporters are coming for them and that Luke is going to be unfairly arrested.
