Echo 216: I'm worthless. You should leave me here with the rest of the garbage.
Master Chief: We all fail. We all make mistakes. It's what makes us humans.
Echo 216: I'm sorry Chief, but how have you ever failed?
Master Chief: I should have protected Cortana. Stopped everything going wrong. I failed her. I will not fail you.
Weapon: Chief...We...we're going to make it. We have to.
Echo 216: I...this is all I've got.
Master Chief: It's all we need. Our only way home is straight through the heart of the Banished.
Weapon: We need you.
Master Chief: We can fix this.
Weapon: Together.
Echo 216: Of course we can. Together.

Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, more simply known as Master Chief, is the main protagonist and the mascot of the Halo franchise. As well as main mascot of Microsoft Xbox.

He is a Spartan-II commando of the UNSC Naval Special Warfare Command who became one of the most important UNSC heroes during the Human-Covenant war.

With over thirty years of active duty, he has become one of the most decorated war veterans in the United Nations Space Command, earning every known UNSC medal except the Prisoner of War Medallion. His goal is to save humanity from hostile alien races.

He was voiced by Steve Downes in all of the games he appeared in.

What Makes Him Loved Exalted?[]

  • While he is stoic and serious for the majority of the time. He is always optimistic and never darkens the tone of the setting.
  • He is honorable and shows respect towards his allies, sometimes even his enemies. Like when he honors Escharum's death after their duel despite all of the atrocities Escharum committed.
  • At the end of Human-Covenant War, he gave Arbiter a brief farewell nod to him, showing he considered Arbiter as his friend despite initially being enemies.
  • He almost never raised his voice. Even when Del Rio angrily ordered him to hand over Cortana, Chief responded to him in a calm and polite manner, "No sir."
  • When Echo-216 had a mental breakdown after being stranded in the Zeta Halo, Chief comforted him that everyone makes mistakes, including himself.
  • He does whatever he can to protect humanity, regardless on what enemies he is facing: the Covenant, the Flood, the Forunners, or the Banished.
  • Near the end of Halo 2, he made a promise to Cortana that he will come back to her in High Charity. Later near the end of Halo 3, he came back and kept his promise, proving his loyalty towards his allies.
  • He attempted to bring mortally wounded Johnson back home, even knowing that he will only slow him down.
  • When Cortana is having Rampancy, he promised her that they will to return home with her to get Dr. Halsey cure her.
  • After Cortana sacrificed herself to save Master Chief, he felt genuine grief about losing her in the end.
  • He makes sure his new AI partner, Weapon, will not become like Cortana for what she did in Halo 5: Guardians. And even though he does not trust Weapon, he still wants to.
