Lumiere is one of the supporting tritagonists in Disney's 30th full-length animated feature of 1991, Beauty and the Beast. He is the Beast's suave maitre d' who became a candelabra during the Enchantress' curse.
From 1991 to 2005, he was originally voiced by the late Jerry Orbach until his death caused this voice role to be taken by Jeff Bennett. In the 2017 live action remake of the same name, he was voiced and portrayed by Ewan McGregor, who also portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi.
What Makes Him Love Exalted?[]
In General[]
- He is very smart, helpful and a thoughtful maitre d' to the Beast.
- Despite being a ladies' man at times, he has a devoted relationship with his fiancée, Plumette.
- Despite normally being at odds, he is best friends with Cogsworth.
Beauty and the Beast[]
- After being changed into a candelabra by the Enchantress' curse, he is optimistic that one day the curse will be undone if his master learns to love someone else.
- When Maurice got stranded in the castle, Lumiere and the other servants provided him hospitality.
- As the Beast accuses Maurice of trespassing into his castle, Lumiere tries unsuccessfully to excuse the master about Maurice being lost in the woods.
- When first seeing Belle, he told Cogsworth that she may be the one who can undo the curse.
- He uses his flames to guide Belle through the dark dungeon, where her father is being held.
- After the Beast allowed Belle to take her father's place, Lumiere advised the Beast to give Belle a more comfortable room.
- He and Mrs. Potts advises the Beast to watch his temper in order to prepare to welcome Belle, to which the latter declines, due to Belle's stubbornness.
- He and the other servants welcome Belle by serving her dinner and a show.
- After Belle got frightened by the Beast's bad temper, Lumiere and Cogsworth tried unsuccessfully to prevent Belle from leaving the castle.
- His knowledge of love and idea of having the Beast show Belle the library is what led to the two having a mutual relationship that will be the key to saving the kingdom from an enchanted curse.
- On the night of the ball, he advises the Beast to be bold, daring and explain his love to Belle.
- Under Cogsworth's orders, Lumiere and the other servants barricaded the foyer door to prevent Gaston and the rioters from storming the castle.
- When this attempt failed, he heroically led the servants to victory in saving the castle from the villagers and save Plumette from being plucked apart by one of Gaston's Stooges, Tom.
- When the Beast "dies", Lumiere, alongside Mrs. Potts and Cogsworth, showed their sadness of their failure until Belle's confession of love revives him as a human.
- Upon becoming human again, he reunited with Prince Adam and expressed his happiness towards his master and Belle for breaking the curse.
- During the wedding, he and Cogsworth negotiated that they should put aside their differences.
Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas[]
- He and the servants decided to gather up preparations for a Christmas party and persuaded Cogsworth into joining the festivities, only to do it out of fear of the master's bad temper.
- When learning the news about Belle and Chip from Cogsworth, the two embarked on their quest to get Belle and Chip from the Black Forest.
- He and the servants expressed their sadness towards Belle, who was locked in the dungeon by the Beast for breaking his promise.
- He and Cogsworth prevented the rose from falling and assisted Belle and the Beast in their fight against Forte.
- They congratulated Belle and the Beast for saving Christmas and the whole castle.
Belle's Magical World[]
- He and Plumette went on a snow ride and confess their love to each other in "Fifi's Folly".
- He and Cogsworth realize their mistake of ruining Mrs. Potts party and worked together to make her birthday party better, while helping to cheer her up.
- He and the servants help save Cogsworth from falling to his death in "Broken Wing"
