Lucas "Luke" Bankole is the deuteragonist of the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale, the television adaptation of the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood.
He was a man living in the United States during Gilead's takeover, at which point him and his wife June Osborne attempted to flee to Canada with their daughter Hannah. Luke manages to escape, but June and Hannah were captured and imprisoned in Gilead. With them gone, Luke becomes a political activist in Canada, fighting to take down Gilead and save his family.
He is portrayed by Luke Bankole.
What Makes Him Love Exalted?[]
- He tried to get June and Hannah out of Gilead during the initial takeover, even firing at soldiers trying to abduct them.
- When he reached Canada and was able to set up a list for loved ones that he could be an emergency contact for in case they escaped from Gilead, he not only put June and Hannah but also Moira since she was a family friend and had no other relatives to serve as a contact for her in Canada.
- He works as a political activist in Canada, trying to not only find a way to save June and Hannah but also working to take down Gilead as a whole.
- Even though it's not his baby he immediately takes Nichole in as his daughter after Emily escapes with her into Canada.
- After June's escape from Gilead she becomes violent and lashes out at the people in her life, but Luke continues to support her, calming her down after she kills Fred Waterford or whenever she is on the verge of a breakdown.
- When a Gilead supporters runs June over and plans to shoot her Luke attacks and kills him in order to save her.
- Once Luke and June decide they need to escape Canada and flee to Alaska in order to escape the Gilead supporters, they make it to a train station where police have held up the train since they have recognized Luke as a flight risk after he killed the man attacking June. Even though it was self defense, Luke recognizes that they won't stop looking for him since he was a refugee who killed a Canadian citizen, and he gives himself up to the police so that June and Nichole can escape on the train to Alaska.
