A person’s a person, no matter how small.
~ Horton displaying his empathy, and his most famous quote.

Horton the Elephant is the titular protagonist of Dr Seuss's books in Horton Hears a Who! and Horton Hatches the Egg!, as well as the film adaptaion. He is an anthropomorphic elephant in the Jungle of Nool who, after hearing a cry from a speck, does everything he can to protect it, which contains all the citizens from Whoville. Afterwards, he spends a considerable amount of time protecting an egg for its negligent mother.

He was portrayed by Jim Carrey in the films.

What Makes Him Love Exalted?[]

Horton Hears a Who![]

  • Upon hearing a cry from a speck, Horton sets out to help it. Despite the difficulty in finding it, he remains steadfast and empathetic, reflecting in the quote above. Once he finds it, he gently places it on a clover, and discovers the existence of Whoville in that speck, vowing to protect them.
  • When the two sour kangaroos mock him for protecting Whoville, he refuses to admonish them and reminds them there are people in it.
  • Even when conflicts arise, like negative rumors being spread around the Jungle, the monkeys and eagle confiscating Whoville, and the town being dropped into a field of specks, Horton continues protecting Whoville's citizens.
  • Spends two days before finally finding Whoville in the field.
  • When Horton is roped and caged by an ignorant mob, with Sour Kangaroo giving Horton the chance to surrender and deny Whoville's existence, Horton continues acknowledging its citizens as people despite how small they are.
  • Assists in giving Whoville enough time to make noise for the other animals to hear them.
  • After the animals hear Whoville's voices, the animals acknowledge their mistaken behavior. Sour Kangaroo silently mopes in defeat, but Horton approaches and comforts her even after what she did to him and Whoville.
  • He forgives Sour Kangaroos, the Wickersham Brothers, and Vlad for all of the terrible acts they did to him, with the former promising to protect Whoville alongside Horton.

Horton Hatches the Egg![]

  • When a mother bird, Mayzie, is bored and discontent in guarding her egg, and sees Horton passing by, she requested take care of the egg, to which he accepts.
  • Horton ensures the tree where the egg resides remains sturdy by propping it with other trees, and kept the egg warm throughout the autumn and winter, even when Mayzie was completely unfaithful to her own egg all this time.
  • As with the previous story, Horton remains determined and protective to the egg even when various conflicts arise, such as numerous animals mocking him, when hunters initially wanting him dead before making him a circus attraction, and spending several weeks remaining trapped inside various vehicles..
  • Thanks to his genuine devotion, the egg hatches into an elephant-bird rather than a bird, proving how his compassion and empathy manage to prevail even in the face of adversity.
