Esmeralda is the deuteragonist of the 1996 Disney animated movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame in addition to it's 2002 direct-to-DVD sequel.
What Makes Her Love Exalted?[]
- While the movie teaches the audience that people should be judged by their behavior and not their appearances, Esmeralda is every bit as good as she appears.
- When Quasimodo accidentally crashed into her tent at the Feast of Fools, instead of being angry at him, she instead helped him up.
- After Quasimodo was being tortured by the townspeople for his deformity (which she accidentally revealed), she saves him and stands up for him.
- While Frollo believes that she is a gypsy witch who is tempting her to sin, the movie establishes this isn’t really the case.
- When she is trapped at Notre Dame, at the suggestion of the Archdeacon, she sings a prayer asking for the liberation of her people, showing she truly cares for them.
- Though she's initially distrustful towards Captain Phoebus, she later saves him from being killed by Frollo's soldiers and helps heal him after escaping from Notre Dame.
- She intervenes when Clopin tries to kill Quasimodo and Phoebus at the Court of Miracles.
- While she decides that Captain Phoebus is her ideal husband, she and Quasimodo have a brotherly and sisterly relationship.
