~ Charlie to Pim. |
Charlie Dompler is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Pim Pimling) of the Adult Swim animated comedy series Smiling Friends.
He is a yellow critter employed by Smiling Friends Inc., a company that seeks to bring joy to their clients. Often at odds with Pim's optimism and determination, Charlie is depicted as more rational and pragmatic, if not somewhat pessimistic.
He is voiced by series co-creator Zach Hadel, who also voices Glep and Gwimbly in the same show.
What Makes Him Love Exalted?[]
- He helps people smile at part of his job at Smiling Friends. He often acts as a counsellor figure to his clients, suggesting ways they can improve their lives or situations. He often offers realistic and constructive advice to them in ways that can be more beneficial than unrelenting optimism or idealism.
- While he is less optimistic and invested in his work compared to Pim, he does seem to enjoy his job and making people happy.
- He loves his coworkers a lot, often tagging along in fun activities, offering them support, standing up for them, etc.
- In "Desmond's Big Day Out," he tags along Pim and Desmond to help him improve the former improve his life and stop him from committing suicide, although he was initially hesitant about it over concerns that they could not help him. Charlie tries to cheer him up by showing him an ant, and also consoles him after he killed a bliblie, assuming regret. Later, he endearingly calls Allan a "crazy character" while embracing him and laughing with him.
- In "Mr. Frog," he helps improve Mr. Frog's reputation after a series of controversies.
- In "Shrimp's Odyssey," he correctly points out to Shrimp that it would be better for him to improve himself rather than chase after his ex-girlfriend. He takes him along to get some sunlight, get a tan, get a new outfit, work out at the gym, and when this unfortunately doesn't work out, he takes him out for a drink at Spaghetti Disco and consoles him.
- In "Who Violently Murdered Simon S. Salty," he embarks on a quest to figure out the circumstances surrounding Simon's death, eventually discovering that his former mascots attempted to kill him. He also honors the request of the Century Egg to be buried in the Chinese Changbai pine forest.
- In "Enchanted Forest," he learns to embrace the whimsical charm and adventure of the titular forest while embarking on a quest with Pim and Mip, helping and saving others, and even ending wars in the process.
- In "Frowning Friends," he, alongside Pim, help to cheer up the victims of the rival company after they were put down by them. He tries to calm DJ Spit down during a mental breakdown and suggests that 3D Squelton should become a balloon maker, which cheers him up. Eventually, he appreciates the Frowning Friends redeeming themselves by the end, calling it a "beautiful ending."
- In "Charlie Dies and Doesn't Come Back," he embarks on a dangerous journey to make Satan smile in order to revitalize Hell and come back to Earth. He does so by offering constructive criticism about Satan's self-destructive and addictive habits, but is unfairly tortured in response. Eventually, he is honored and saved by God, who explains that he passed his test to confront his own problems. Ultimately, Charlie makes amends with Pim after an argument they had in the beginning.
- In "Gwimbly: Definitive Remastered Enhanced Extended Edition DX 4K (Anniversary Director’s Cut)," he is unfairly tortured and abused by James, but still fulfills all of his requests while hoping to make him smile. Eventually, it is revealed that James viewed Charlie as the only person who gave him a chance.
- In "Mr. President," he helps President Jimble improve his reputation and leadership skills in order to win the presidency.
- In "Erm, the Boss Finds Love," he plans to kill Brittney, the Boss' new wife, after discovering that she plans to suck his soul and steal all of his belongings before delivering them to Satan.
- In "Brother's Egg," he helps Professor Psychotic improve his life and his relationship with his brother by offering constructive and realistic advice, such as informing him that his brother's concerns are valid, trying to help him talk to women, and taking him out to lunch at one of his favorite restaurants. In the beginning of the episode, he also criticizes Mr. Boss for his tasteless joke about pedophile Jared Fogle, insisting that he has crossed a line.
- In "Charlie, Pim, and Bill vs The Alien," he converses with and hangs out with Pim's UFO searching buddies despite being reluctant initially. He eventually stands up to the Alien Dudebros after they sadistically pranked and abused them, asserting that they are childish and cruel.
- In "The Magical Red Jewel (aka Tyler Gets Fired)," he becomes angry after Tyler is fired by Mr. Boss, standing up for him and initially insisting that he will quit if Tyler is fired. Later, he is seen supporting Tyler and taking him out for drinks. In the same episode, he helps Allan look after Mr. Boss' son Jason while he is away, distraught after believing he died.
- In "Pim Finally Turns Green," he tries to help Rotten enjoy life and accept the inevitability of death. He does so by contacting Bill Nye to cheer him up with a song and display, and later hangs out with him at the beach while playing volleyball. When Rotten presumably dies, he consoles Pim, insisting that he lived a good life. Later, when everything turns out fine, he sweetly declares that he loves his friends, country, and God, compliments Allan's rocket shoes, Pim's role in bringing Rotten to life, and reaffirming that Mr. Boss is the funniest guy he knows.
- In "The Smiling Friends Go to Brazil," he tries to explain to Pim that he is not truly angry at him for messing up their trip to Brazil, and pragmatically argues that they should go back and plan better next time.
