“ | I promise you, that I will take Henry out of the Badlands, mate. I will raise that little boy as my own son. I'll let him know that his father was a great man, and a great friend. | „ |
~ Bajie's final words promising to protect Henry after Sunny's death. |
Bajie is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Tilda) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He is a former Dark One and member of the Abbot Monastery who eventually lost his Gift before ending up in the Bordeaux Mines, where he met Sunny. Together, Bajie aided Sunny in getting back into the Badlands in order to find his family, while he worked towards his secret lifelong mission of contacting Azra, in the hopes that they will come back to the Badlands and save everyone from the wasteland that they live in.
He was portrayed by Nick Frost.
What Makes Him Love Exalted?[]
- While he can be a bit snarky and sarcastic at times, he usually only directs it at people who are villainous or jerks themselves, and is generally kind and polite to those he meets on his journey.
- While he does start the series being a bit of a jerk, he ultimately subverts this and redeems himself very quickly, and does not act like a jerk for the rest of the series.
- While he has made mistakes in the past such as leaving Minerva and Lily behind, he eventually apologizes to both of them and his reason for leaving was his noble goal of saving the world.
- His mission in life is to contact the legendary city of Azra, and while it ends up backfiring by calling the warlord Pilgrim to the Badlands, Bajie didn't know this and genuinely believed that it was going to save the world, meaning his true goal was always to help others.
- He helps Sunny with his goal of finding his family despite it being of no benefit to himself, and it often puts him in danger, but he never gives up on aiding him. After Sunny's son Henry develops the Gift in infancy, something that threatens his life, Bajie goes out of his way to help Sunny save Henry and following Sunny's death at the hands of Pilgrim, Bajie promises to raise Henry as his own son and take him somewhere away from the Badlands where he will be safe.
- He saves Sunny's life multiples times throughout the series, such as when Nathaniel Moon tries to stab him in the back, when Sunny is put into a coma by Cyan, when Sunny tries to storm Quinn's bunker, and after Sunny is captured by the Black Lotus.
- After he learns that his signal called Pilgrim and sent the world into jeopardy, his new goal becomes stopping Pilgrim's crusade, and he fights Pilgrim alongside Sunny and Kannin in the final battle for the Badlands, fully willing to give up his own life in order to save the world.
