Alexei is a major character in Season 3 of Stranger Things.
He is a Russian scientist who was forced into working on the Key beneath the Starcourt Mall, until he was kidnapped by Hopper and Joyce in order to help them out to stop the Russians. Alexei gave information to them and assisted them in stopping the Russians until he was killed by Grigori. Alexei can barely speak English, but is extremely fluent in his mother language, Russian.
He is portrayed by Alec Utgoff.
What Makes Him Love Exalted?[]
- Although he did work for the Russians to open a gate to the Upside Down in order for them to have an advantage in the Cold War, this does not make him villainous as he was just doing his job as an scientist without indication of any malicious intent and was forced into opening another portal by General Stepanov, threatening him that he only has one year to do so and that if he fails to open a portal in time he will get killed just like his former co-worker, making him tragic.
- He was genuienly shocked and saddened after he watched his co-worker getting strangled to death by Grigori, showing that he cared for him.
- He warned Hopper and Joyce when the car was about to explode even when Hopper tells him to shut up.
- He has a childish personality that makes him lovable as seen when he watches Looney Tunes, drinks slurpees and when he plays carnival games, often having a big smile on his face due to enjoying these activities.
- He has many comedic moments, examples include:
- Him trying to give information to Joyce when she tries to talk with him in English (he does not speak english well) about the magnets issues caused by the opening of the portal, with him saying funny things such as "vroom vroom" or “machina”.
- Him chillingly drinking his slurpee while watching Hopper explain to Todd why they need his car, lying that Alexei is a "child murderer", being oblivious to what Hopper said about him due to him not knowing english well.
- Him calling Murray a "bald american pig" when he threatened to shoot him with a shotgun.
- Him spitting his strawberry slurpee when he found out that it was not with cherry, calling it "shit strawberry".
- Him refusing to give Hopper information for giving him the wrong slurpee, by saying "No cherry, no deal!".
- Him trying to get back to the Russians, with the car taken by Hopper, only to realise that if he returns he will get killed by the Russians. After that he returns, gives the keys back to Hopper and exclaimed that "He likes strawberries too".
- Him asking Murray if they can watch Looney Tunes now, being saddened when Murray said no.
- Him laughing at Hopper when he said that he will get him to the Key, to stop the Russians, telling him that he reminds him of a "fat rambo" because of his courage and his weight.
- Him asking Murray if Joyce and Hopper had sex, after witnessing them constantly fighting with each other, laughing with Murray when he found out that they didn't.
- While reluctant to work with them at first, he eventually bonded with Murray, Joyce and Hopper, and was friendly towards them:
- Out of the three he got the closest to Murray as he was the only one who knew russian, allowing them to communicate efficiently and they have good moments together such as them laughing at Joyce and Hopper for not being a couple yet and them going to the carnival with Murray explaining to him how the carnival games work. Aditionally he happily showed the giant Woody Woodpecker that he won to Murray, with Murray being happy for him.
- He was on good terms with Joyce as he was always friendly to her when she interacted with him.
- While at first he did not got along with Hopper due to him refusing to help them, after Hopper beated him up he started to cooperate with them without any hesitation and even admired Hopper's courage when he said that he will get him to the key.
- He assisted Hopper, Joyce and Murray in closing the gate to stop the Russians, by giving them information, even wanting to defect from the Soviet Union to become an american citizen.
- He explained to Hopper, Joyce and Murray that the Russians created a portal in Hawkins because the barrier was weakened there, due to a portal being already opened two years ago by Eleven (under Martin Brenner's orders) and explained to them how the portals work.
- The carnival game of Balloon Darts that he played was entertaining to watch and he showed very good accuracy, even winning the game and getting a giant Woody Woodpecker.
- He was friendly towards the children at the carnival and gave them a high five.
- His death is played for sympathy, as he got shot in the chest by Grigori, with Joyce and Murray being genuinenly saddened when they witnessed his death. Even Hopper who was hostile (mostly) towards him, was shocked when he found out from Joyce and Murray that he died, showing that his death left a great impact on them.
- What makes his death more sympathetic is the fact that he wanted to experience the things he likes such as carnival games and slurpees and that he was just enjoying the carnival games without even trying to help the heroes in stopping the Russians at the time only to get killed right after his game of darts.
